ETIAS will start operations in Q4 2026

ETIAS travel authorisation is a new entry requirement for visa-exempt nationals travelling to any of the 30 European Union countries for a short stay, such as holidays or business travel.

It is linked to a traveller’s passport and valid for up to three years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. If you get a new passport, you must get a new ETIAS travel authorisation.

It’s now been confirmed that following further delays, ETIAS will commence with a soft launch in the last quarter of 2026.

No action is required from travellers at this point, but it’s a good idea to be aware of these changes. The EU will advise the exact date for the start of ETIAS several months prior to its launch.

With a valid ETIAS travel authorisation, you can enter these European countries as often as you want for short-term stays - of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. However, it does not guarantee entry. When you arrive, border control will ask to see your passport and other documents and verify that you meet the entry conditions.

You must be in possession of a valid ETIAS travel authorisation during your entire stay in the European countries requiring ETIAS. You can leave and come back at any time as long as you respect the time limits. Your dedicated Meon travel consultant will continue to update you and your travellers on any future changes with regards to this new system.
