Jump the train for smarter, greener, and more cost-effective travel options with Amtrak’s new ‘NextGen Acela’

NextGen Acela Train Interior

For clients seeking greener alternatives to short-haul flights and opportunities to reduce travel spend, Amtrak launched the first of its NextGen Acela trains on the Northeast Corridor on August 28.

Operating between Washington DC, New York and Boston, the new fleet offers a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to premium domestic air travel, particularly for travellers connecting to or from long-haul transatlantic flights. By combining flights into East Coast gateways with onward rail connections, organizations can both lower air travel costs and reduce their carbon footprint.

Key enhancements on the NextGen Acela include:

  • 27% more seating capacity per departure, easing availability for corporate travellers.

  • Expanded weekday and weekend schedules, offering greater flexibility for business itineraries.

  • High-speed 5G-enabled Wi-Fi, plus individual power outlets and reading lights for productivity on the move.

Amtrak will initially introduce five NextGen Acela trains, with 23 additional units entering service throughout 2027. The transition period will see both current and new Acela trains in operation.
